Throughout 2020 we witnessed a resurgence of hand and thread hobbies and endeavours. The fashion world was no exemption, with a rise of small - and large - brands beginning to delve into hand-crafted goodies like knit hats and burets, crochet coats and jackets, and other glorious artisanal items to add to the closet. Whether it is a sign of the times and creatives across the world are finally starting on a project due to the pandemic, there is a major shift taking place with a desire more than ever for slow-fashion, and the hand-crafted. Below, we share with you below our favourite knits, crochet, and patchwork pieces to check out as we roll into 2021.

OBR DESIGNS

Custom hat, various prices.

Based in Los Angeles, OBR DESIGNS first caught our eye with cute crochet hats (there’s one shaped like a strawberry!) but other hand-made goods also include ying-yang printed tote bags, and fruit-shaped purses.

CRANDALL DUFFY

Lucrezia Sweater, $415.00.

We probably shouldn’t go much further without mentioning that crochet berets are IN right now, with Cat Crandall Duffy of Crandall Duffy designs, leading the way. All of Duffy’s hats (along with other cool accessories like neck-warmers, and blouses, like the one above) can be custom made with a rainbow of choices for the mohair, and linen materials. We see Duffy going big places in the future, and you can shop all of her designs here.

JOSEFINE DYRING

Prices range from $290 to
to $480.

Made in Copenhagen, Josefine Dyring Knit’s are handmade pieces in beautiful pastel colours. What sets Dyring apart from other knitting creatives at this time is her extensive hours put into a single sweater, which can be seen above. Layers and rows of different pastel colours, Dyring explained to us that she β€œβ€¦loves to slow down and make styles that take many, many hours”, and although she has a sustainable approach to all of her creations, β€œit is important to me not to make β€œsafe” choices but to play with colours, shapes, and techniques,” she says. β€œMy style is not for everyone, but for the ones who fall in love with it.”

LUNA CROCHET

Price dependent on custom order.

We featured Luna Crochet Studio’s beautiful hand-knit beret in another post, here. Most recently, though, this Copenhagen-based designer has launched a small capsule of tote bags, which we are totally here for. Luna explains that the impetus behind her brand was during the beginning of the 2020 pandemic. β€œDuring the lockdown this spring, I fell in love with crochet and knitting and how the craft has no limits in terms of creating,” she shares. β€œIt is very important for me to use materials in a good quality, so [that] my consumers can treasure their purchases, forever.”

FIELD TRIP

Price dependent on custom order.

Based in Canada, Ronnie Teo of Field Trip shop creates made-to-order crochet garments like cardigans, and vests. Our favourite pieces from Field Trip have to be the cloud cardigan, adorned with cloud-shaped buttons, and a bright blue colour. We also adore a custom cardigan she made for a customer with flower pockets and buttons.

HONEY BEA DESIGNS

Tapestry Coat, $385 CAD.

Made in Toronto, these heirloom pieces, like sweaters, oven mitts, and coats, are made up of upcycled textiles and fabrics, creating a never-duplicated unique piece for the closet.

CAVIA

Sandra, €595.00.

Made in Italy with upcycled yarns and often 100% merino wool, CAVIA recently came across our radar after it-girls in Scandinavia were seen wearing black dresses and blouses with a touch of colourful knitted pieces around the collars, and edges. We’re also a big fan of the statement pieces - like the Sandra sweater above - and can’t wait to someday place an order for ourselves.

FAREWELL FRANCES

Erin Coat, $425.

Another heirloom brand we can’t wait to add to our closet is Farewell Frances. Made by designer Carly Scheck, each piece incorporates hand-sourced, heirloom textiles, and materials in and around the cozy New York state area, where Scheck lives in a cottage-style home. This brand is an ode to the cultural movement of Americana, and a desire to return to a more minimalistic lifestyle.
