The coolest Scandinavian fashion brands to follow right now
Every so often, I stumble across fashion roundups referring to the Parisian βit-girl'. In other words, the lifelong pursuit of dressing to resemble the most stylish and coordinated individuals populating the streets of Paris (cue, @frenchgirldaily). Sure, I love a good stereotypical en Francais blouse and sundress, too, but I canβt help but to make an argument for why actually, Scandinavian fashion is truly where itβs at.
For anyone that knows me, I completely adore all things Scandinavian: Aesthetically pleasing lifestyle objects, minimalist beauty routines. And perhaps what I cherish most about the Scandinavian fashion industry is that craftsmanship, and curated colour, is valued above all else.
It was actually my mother, who lived for many years in Sweden in her thirties, that first brought this to my attention some years ago. She had mentioned one of the main differentiators between Canadian and Swedish women is that in the latter country, they truly rely on colour in all aspects of their lives. I currently live in Vancouver, Canada, and it is known to be the Canadian equivalent of New York when it comes to fashion: Black, and more black, all season long. Personally, I can't think of anything worse. But the Swedish people, on the other hand, equip themselves with colourful fashion as a means of creative expression to bring some sunshine to those dark, dreary wintersβand even more excitement to those long summer days. Although thereβs always a place for black in the closet, I definitely prefer the motto of the more colour the better (thanks, Mum, and thank you Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Iceland).
It should also come as no surprise, then, that every year, I tune in to Copenhagen Fashion Week and Stockholm Fashion Week to admire the #Scandiitgirls from afar. The colours, the street style, and the display of artistic sophistication, never ceases to amaze. But itβs also the fact that sustainability, like small batches and made-to-order business models, continues to be at the forefront. And I absolutely love that.
Today, I share my favourite brands from Scandinavia with the hope that maybe you too will make the switch from admiring the Parisian it-girl, to being an unwavering fan of the #Scandiitgirl.
